Evaluation of antibacterial activity of liverwort species of Bagh Azad Jammu and Kashmir (Western Himalaya) against pathogenic bacteria

This research work aims to assess antibacterial potential of five liverwort species that have been collected from District Bagh Azad Jammu and Kashmir. For this purpose, two bacterial strains including Achromobacter xylosoxidans (Gram- negative) Bacillus licheniformis positive) were used by following disc diffusion method. The extract the was prepared in ethanol, methanol water. results showed ethanol extracts all liverworts stronger broader spectrum for zone inhibition against both bacteria. Among investigated species, Marchantia emarginata Pellia epiphylla most promising results, whereas lowest activity shown Plagiochasma rupestre. In aqueous extract, only paleacea Plageochasma rupestre positive results. general, resistance Gram-positive superior Gram-negative strains. study proved possess strong defensive mechanism bacteria can be prepare novel antibiotics.
